1. As is the nature of decorative hardware, there is no particular rule on determining a right location to place knobs and pulls. Typically, knobs and pulls are placed on the opposite side of the door hinges or in the middle of the drawer front to minimize the applied open force. Aesthetically, it is the decision of the installer.
2. Avante decorative hardware knobs and pulls utilize a standard #8-32 UNC machine screw (unless specified otherwise). A 3/16" diameter drilled hole is suitable for the standard #8-32 UNC machine screw.
3. Some Avante pull designs contain mounting pegs. A mounting peg is an extension of a mounting hole. A 5/16" diameter drilled hole will be required for the mounting pegs to sit flush with the application surface.
4. The length of the machine screw to be used with Avante decorative hardware will be determined by adding 0.25" to the wood thickness. For pulls with mounting pegs, the length of the machine screw will be approximately equal with that of the wood thickness.
5. To properly mount hardware to the door surface and or drawer front, a suitable screwdriver should be utilized to prevent damage to the wood surface. To replace an old knob with a new Avante knob, carefully unscrew the old knob by removing the existing screw with the use of a screwdriver to prevent scratching the door surface. If scratches already exist, choose an Avante knob with a wider base to cover it up or if space is available, use a knob in conjunction with a back-plate.
6. Most pulls employ 2 screws; you'll need to measure the C-C dimension of the existing pulls to determine the proper size hardware in order to avoid re-drilling the mounting holes. If you are willing to patch the old mounting holes or if you are starting from scratch, your hardware options multiply.
7. If starting from scratch, use a combination square or create a template to make consistent layout marks on the doors or drawer fronts. Select adequate bits to drill new holes from the front of the door to prevent splintering or blow out.
8. Most drawers under 18" wide require one knob or pull. Most drawers over 18" wide require two knobs or pulls. Most cabinet doors require one knob or pull. Carefully count the number of knobs and pulls you'll need before ordering. It is recommended to have a few extras for future replacement.
9. Last but not least, it is crucial to utilize proper cleaning methods in order to maintain the hardwares appearance. When cleaning Avante hardware, use a soft damp cloth and mild detergent to gently rub off any foreign materials on the hardwares surface. Using abrasive or corrosive agents may damage the finish.
